Cinderford Art Space,
Cinderford

Cinderford Artspace is an independent registered charity. As a community arts organisation, initiated in 1988 through voluntary effort and evolving in response to local need in the Forest of Dean, Artspace is a Combined Arts organisation providing varied arts activities and amenities from its base in Cinderford.

This centre provides a place where people of all ages (under 5’s to over 80’s) and from all sections of the community can come together in a creative and supportive environment, offering a place of belonging to many isolated individuals and those daunted by more formal educational structures. It is unique within Gloucestershire, and in its ethos, growth and development reflects the individuality of the Forest of Dean whose community it primarily serves.

Since moving in to the current premises in 2003 the organisation has grown and as a result facilities and provision at the centre are in high demand. Classes are over prescribed and the building is no longer large enough to accommodate the many people who use it.

The programmes offered includes ceramics, textiles, painting and drawing, print making, animation, drama, dance, circus and more.

The spaces within the existing building are not well suited to aerial arts, acrobatics and other circus skills with low floor to ceiling height making it difficult to practice. In spite of this over the last 10 years, the youth circus, Engage, has built up a national reputation for quality and professionalism which has resulted in demand for a facility beyond that which is currently provided.

The  overarching principle was to design a purpose built rehearsal & performance space, including aerial and circus skills and to improve and extend the art workshop spaces so more visual arts classes could be held to meet the high demand.

Inspiration was taken from the traditional circus performance space. To emphasise the verticality and the dramatic nature of the space, the concept developed into a designing a contemporary cruck frame for the rehearsal and performance space.  This frames were designed to utilise the unusual structure, providing multiple fixing points for rigging equipment for the aerial acrobatics as well as serving to support the first floor gallery and the technicians gantry at the highest level.
